Introduction For a while I’ve been using physical not taking in order to keep track of tasks, log thoughts and just generally brainstorm ideas. This is mainly due to the fact that I became very used to taking physical notes during my undergraduate degree and just didn’t stop and the fact that whenever I have tried to use digital note taking it has just enough friction that I don’t stick to it.

IBM Mouse Retrofit

IBM branded mouse. Introduction For a while now I have been wanting to use a more appropriate mouse with the other hardware I use in my main computer setup. This mainly consists of a FSSK keyboard that is a modern product that uses IBM model f buckling spring keys in a Model M style housing. I also use a DELL P1110 as my main monitor. I have a plan to use a IBM PC 5150 as a USB-C docking station as well so my setup doesn’t really suit modern gaming or productivity mice from companies such as Razer and Logitech.

Custom PC Build

Complete water and electric connection loops Introduction Quite a few years ago now I decided to try and build a custom PC with water cooling and custom manufactured parts. I remember at the time being captivated by the trend of custom PC builds, by things such as the Murder Box and various other PC builds that prioritised aesthetics and craftsmanship in the final product. This is something that unfortunately is often missing in the mass produced PC space.

Igor: Tool for remote development

Igor Turing my PhD I made extensive use of tools such as Docker and kubernetes for running my experiments. I also decided to train all my agents on my own hardware so this meant constructing my own kubernetes cluster with multiple nodes and many GPUs, this ended up being around 6 nodes with 6 GPUs although two of those GPUs where laptop GPUs mainly used for inference. I also have a fondness for old Thinkpad laptops and at the time was using an old Thinkpad X60 as my main computer for all of my work, this is a computer that had a 32bit core2duo processor at a time when a 6 core i7 was not considered to be out of the ordinary on a laptop.

Sony PVM-6041QM

Sony PVM-6041QM Introduction I recently acquired a Sony PVM-6041QM CRT. I thought it would make a nice screen for showing album art in my reading/listening area I created. It now has also doubled up as a screen to play retro games on, mainly 16bit systems.
Setup Outputing an Image Outputting an image to this model is pretty straightforward, it receives RGBS signals that can be easily converted with a VGA to Scart adapter and then using a SCART to RGBS cable to hook up the computer.

Literature Reading Workflow

Introduction I have gone through many different iterations of how to keep track of my reading throughout my PhD and professional career. Here I document my latest version that so far has most of the kinks worked out, along with various improvements I would like to add in the future.
Towards the start of my PhD I begun tracking reading material and papers using Zotero, mainly because it seemed to have all the features I required and included browser plugins that would allow for easy adding of new papers that I came across.

Leader-Based Linux Workflows

Introduction I’ve configured my Linux workflow with a leader-based keyboard shortcut system, inspired by the Vim text editor, utilizing a single key (the “leader”) for various custom actions. I’ve integrated this with the powerful dmenu tool, making it a breeze to access a list of applications or actions based on a given key combination. The adoption of a leader-based system offers numerous advantages, including enhanced productivity and efficiency. This is achieved by allowing me to execute complex tasks more swiftly, as frequently used commands can be chained together using the leader key.

RL Training DAG

Introduction During my PhD I conducted many experiments that would take multiple hours to run. This included experiments that required multiple runs in order to assess their average performance. This is done to evaluate the effect of the networks initialisation on training and also to account for the stochastic nature of Reinforcement Learning (RL) problems.
In this article I outline the process I have developed in order to automate this whole process with Kubernetes and Argo.

CYBERDECK-PI18

Cyberdeck based on a custom mechanical keyboard and raspberry Pi Introduction This is a small project that was mainly an excuse to build a keyboard. The main idea behind this was to have a 60% mechanical keyboard that also had a small screen attached for either running apps locally on a raspberry pi, or showing information from a Kubernetes cluster over SSH. It ended up being a pretty simple project with CNC milling carbon fibre being the trickiest part dulling many end mills in the process.
